Welcome to the Equipment Safety Awareness Training — designed specifically for the Southeast region production lines of Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn.

In high-speed, high-stakes manufacturing environments, safety isn’t optional — it’s essential. This project aimed to empower frontline workers with the knowledge and confidence to prioritize safety while maintaining production efficiency.

This program, consisting of four carefully designed modules, works hand-in-hand with the mentor-led guidance to help:

Recognize common equipment risks in daily work.
Understand safety devices and their role in preventing injuries.
Identify warning signs to stop problems before they escalate.
Build safety-first habits to protect both worker's themselves and their team.

Over the total length about two hours courseware, we break these topics down into 4 practical, easy-to-follow lessons — using visuals, scenarios, and interactive challenges to help workers learn faster and retain more.

My Role

As the lead learning designer, I collaborated closely with production supervisors, safety experts, and content developers to ensure the training was both accurate and engaging. My role spanned from conducting initial needs analysis — uncovering key safety gaps — to designing visually-driven, interactive modules that resonated with frontline workers.

The multilingual and cross-time-zone collaboration added complexity to the project,

but also made it an especially rewarding experience.

🎯 Analysis

Goal: Ensure frontline factory workers understand equipment risks and adopt safer behaviors.
Learner Profile: Factory line workers, many with limited formal education and little patience for text-heavy content.
Key Challenges: Unsafe shortcuts, lack of awareness about machinery hazards, and a culture of prioritizing speed over safety.
Solution: A highly visual, interactive training program that simplifies complex safety concepts, making them easy to grasp and retain.

Collaborated with workers to study accident reports and incorporated data-driven insights into the courseware.

🛠️ Design

Learning Objectives: Identify common equipment risks. Understand safety devices and warning signs. Take action when spotting potential hazards.
Content Strategy: Visual storytelling replaces heavy text. Interactive elements (e.g., "spot the danger" challenges) engage learners. Scenarios reflect real production line situations for better relatability.
Tone: Clear, supportive, and empowering — to encourage behavior change, not blame.

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Figma.
Content Creation:
- Custom illustrations designed to mirror real factory setups.
- 4 sections lessons with voiceover and animations guide learners step-by-step.
- Built-in knowledge checks with immediate feedback ensure understanding.
Team Collaboration: I led instructional design and visual layout while collaborating with illustrators, developers, and voice scripter to bring the content to life.

The overall tone of the courseware aligns with Apple’s design style and philosophy, featuring a minimalist and sophisticated visual approach.

🚀 Implementation

Delivery Platform: SCORM-compliant module for easy LMS integration. Apple China developed their own LMS platform and we adjust our courseware to fit.
Rollout Strategy: Piloted with a small group of line workers for early feedback. Adjustments made to enhance clarity and engagement. Full deployment across multiple factory lines.

📊 Evaluation

Formative Evaluation: Collected feedback from test groups to refine pacing and interactivity.
Summative Evaluation:
- Knowledge assessments showed improved hazard recognition.
- Supervisors reported a noticeable reduction in unsafe behaviors.
- Workers felt more confident speaking up when spotting potential risks.

Conclusion

This project was more than just a training course—it was a strategic effort to enhance workplace safety in one of the world’s largest manufacturing environments. Over four months, we designed a 400-page interactive courseware that transformed dry safety guidelines into an engaging and accessible learning experience.
By aligning with Apple’s signature minimalist and high-end design approach, we created a visually streamlined yet highly effective training program. The course not only met the learning needs of factory workers but also proved its impact through testing—showing a significant improvement in workplace safety behaviors.
